»Paliativna oskrba/Paliative Care – an interdisciplinary approach«

WHEN: 30. 6. 2021 – 5. 7. 2021 (due to COVID-19 situation in Slovenia we will most probably organise the summer school online; if the circumstances allow us we will as well have the live version mostly for the local participants - hybrid way)

WHERE: LJUBLJANA, Slovenia

SHORT DESCRIPTION/INTRODUCTION:
Although preserving life is a central goal of medicine, in the end, death is an unavoidable outcome. Exposure to death and dying had a strong influence on the present life. (Sinclair S., 2011).

Palliative care is a holistic approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problem associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual (World Health Organisation, 2018).On the other hand interventions are sometimes delivered in a fragmented patteren, i. e. only component of palliative care (e.g. pain medication, home parenteral nutrition, home oxygen, psychotherapy, social work, bereavement support, respite care, physical exercise, assistance with living wills …) are conducted with some populations. This fragmentation also indicates the necessity for palliative care to be fully coordinated and integrated into healthcare delivery within every setting.(Murray et al., 2015).

TOPICS OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL:
The aim of this summer school is to assist students of different profiles by educating and discussing the current context in which health and spiritual care for the palliative patients’ functions in Slovenia and Europe. A wider examination of palliative care models and a critical appraisal of the variation in findings will help improve the evidence-base for the development, implementation and evaluation of palliative care services in the future. It gives the evidences for improvements on patient, family and health system available for different population-based models of palliative care from studies and international discussions at group discussions.

GOALS OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL:
Medical education in palliative care is essential to prepare future clinicians, nursing care providers,  spiritual assistants, healthcare workers, home health aides, or home support workers.

Guidelines by the European Association if Palliative Care recommend that teaching time for palliative care should prioritize pain and symptom management, psychosocial and spiritual aspects, and communication skills. Basic concepts, ethical and legal issues, and principles of teamwork and self-reflection are additional topics.

Training in a specialized palliative care context will increase capacity in essential palliative care skills in Slovenia and all European countries.

At the end of summer school each participant will have to submit the final seminar paper. On the basis of the successfully completed seminar paper the student will receive the final certificate.

THERE IS NO FEE.
